Conversations with Popular Art
Conversations with Popular Art highlights the work of self-taught, or “Intuitive,” artists from the Cayman Islands, alongside other Caymanian artists who engage with popular art idioms and techniques. Featuring a wide range of media—from paintings and drawings to carvings, textiles, ceramics, and decorated objects—the exhibition explores how popular art expresses cultural identity, imagination, and community, while challenging the boundaries between art and craft. It invites reflection on the role of popular art in the Caymanian artistic landscape, acknowledging its foundational influence while questioning its marginal status. Showcasing both celebrated figures like Gladwyn K. “Miss Lassie” Bush and lesser-known or anonymous artists, as well as mainstream artists such as Charles Long and Virginia Foster, the exhibition draws largely from the Museum’s own collections, including the Ira Thompson and Virginia Foster Collections, and forms part of a broader initiative to activate and share more of the Museum’s holdings with the public.
